The short answer
SEO is worth doing for roofers, but it is a slow, long-term asset, not a way to fill next month's calendar. Ahrefs found only 1.74% of new pages reach Google's top 10 within a year. For estimates this quarter, paid leads or appointment setting work faster. Most roofers need a mix. We do not sell SEO.
Want booked estimates instead of leads? We run the ads, vet every homeowner and put exclusive estimates on your calendar. You pay per qualified meeting.

What is SEO for roofing?
SEO for roofing is the work of getting your roofing company to show up when homeowners search Google. It has two parts. Local SEO covers your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the map results. Website SEO covers the pages on your own site, such as one for roof replacement and one for repairs, with real photos of your work. Searches like "seo for roofing", "roofing SEO" and "local SEO for roofing companies" all describe this same job.

How long does SEO take for roofers?
Longer than most owners expect. Ahrefs looked at 1 million random pages in its crawler and found that only 1.74% of newly published pages ranked in the top 10 within a year. In the same research, the page ranking number one on Google was on average 5 years old (Ahrefs, How long does it take to rank). Those are all industries, not roofing alone, and the figures change when Ahrefs updates its study. The point stands: a new roofing website does not rank in a few weeks.
Google's map results work differently. They depend on your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the person searching. That is a separate job from ranking website pages, and it is a good one to start now.
Ahrefs, How long does it take to rank (updated May 15, 2025): 1 million random pages crawled in September 2023; page age from 1.3 million US keywords. All industries, not roofing alone, and Ahrefs revises the figures.

What is a top Google position actually worth?
A great deal, and the value falls off a cliff. Advanced Web Ranking tracks real click data from more than a million US results pages a month. In July 2026 the first organic result took about 20% of clicks on desktop, the second about 10% and the third under 4%. From position six on, each result took under 1%.

Advanced Web Ranking, Google organic CTR study: Google US, desktop, all search intents, July 2026 snapshot of 1.75M+ US results pages a month. Click rates vary by device, topic and whether an AI Overview appears.
When Google shows an AI Overview, the first result's share falls to under 10%. The lesson for a roofer: ranking tenth is nearly worth nothing, and the top three are a hard race to win against established roofing sites and national directories. That is why SEO needs a long horizon.

What can SEO reach, and what can it not?
In the Roofing Contractor survey, 74% of homeowners said they follow a recommendation from someone they know, and 50% said they use a search engine. So SEO can reach about half of roofing homeowners, but only if you rank. Referrals and reviews reach a bigger group and cost you no ad budget. Search is also changing: BrightLocal found 71% of consumers use Google to read local reviews, and 45% now use ChatGPT or another AI tool for local recommendations. Both read the same trail of reviews and profile details. See the survey figures in our home service marketing guide.

Are roofers searching for SEO or for leads?
For SEO, more than for anything else. In Google's Keyword Planner, "SEO for roofers" gets about 1,900 US searches a month, ahead of "roofing leads" at about 1,000.
UniTrick research in Google Ads Keyword Planner, United States, 12 months to September 2026, pulled Oct 16, 2026. Rounded averages; Google groups close variants, so related phrases can share a number. The roofing leads figure is an upper bound because it can include searches for lead as a metal.
That tells us roofers want a steadier source of work and are looking at SEO as the answer. It deserves an honest reply: it can be, over time. It is rarely the fastest way to fill the next month's calendar.

How do SEO, paid leads and appointment setting compare for roofers?
| SEO | Paid leads and ads | Appointment setting | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to first estimate | Months to years | Days to weeks | Days to weeks |
| What you pay for | Work, whether or not it ranks | Leads or clicks. For roofing on search ads, the median was $10.70 a click and $228.15 a lead (LocaliQ) | Qualified meetings (with UniTrick) |
| If you stop paying | Rankings often last for a while | Inquiries stop | Appointments stop |
| Exclusive to you? | Yes, if the homeowner finds you | Depends on the source | Yes |
| Best when | You are planning 12 months ahead | You can answer fast and filter yourself | Your own time is the scarce thing |
| Main risk | Paying for work that never ranks | Shared or low-budget inquiries | A weak definition of qualified |

Which should a roofer start with?
- Your calendar is thin this month: start with a fast channel, paid ads or appointment setting. SEO will not help in time.
- You get most work from referrals: add a second channel before referrals slow down. Read why referral-only pipelines stall.
- You have steady work and a 12-month horizon: invest in SEO and reviews alongside a fast channel.
- You have a small budget: do the free work first. Claim your Google Business Profile, ask every customer for a review and show real project photos.
08 —
Why do we not sell SEO?
Because it is not what we do best, and we would rather say so. UniTrick plans the offer, runs the outreach, vets homeowners and books exclusive estimates. We are a fast channel. If you want a long-term SEO program, hire a specialist, and ask for deliverables you can check. Google itself says no one can guarantee a number one ranking (Google Search Central), so treat a guarantee as a warning sign.

What can a roofer do for SEO without hiring anyone?
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Check your service area, hours and categories.
- Ask every happy customer for a review, the day the job finishes.
- Write one page for each main service you want more of, such as roof replacement, with real photos of your own work.
- Make sure your phone number and booking link are visible on every page.
